Clinical Application of the Betahistine Mesylate (Meniace) in Controlling Vertigo.


Abstract
Following the earlier reports in relation to the treatment of Meniere¢¥s syndrome with histamine, publications concerning the effect of betahistine in Meniere¢¥s syndrome have been presented by various authors. Betahistine showed a physiological activity similar to histamine and a lack of sympathomimetic activity. Betahistine mesylate (Meniace) was analyzed to evaluate its effect. The subjective modification of the various symptoms as well as modification of vestibular function were analyzed in 18
cases who had suffered from vertigo.
The following results were obtained
1) Meniace seems effect in controlling the subjective symptoms of vertigo(72.2%), vomiting(66.7 %) and nausea (60%).
2) Objective vestibular function test revealed effectiveness of righting reflex test and deviation test
of lower extremity (66.7%), positional nystagmus (60%), and spontaneous nystagmus (60%).
3) The subjective symptoms and vestibular function seems effect slightly in cochlear symptomatology. 4) For evaluation of the effect of betahistine mesylate, it is necessary to use its drug at least for 3 weeks.
